This historic travel presentation of OHP has been requested for a long time now. Every time we bring up The White Oak Civil War Museum on the Relic Roundup it is always: “You got to go!”, “It’s unbelievable!”, or a number of other comments but always ending with an exclamation mark. White Oak Museum houses an extensive collection of Civil War artifacts, representing both Union and Confederate troops. Most items were discarded or lost by troops camping or fighting in the Stafford County and Fredericksburg areas. Displays will amaze the novice as well as the serious Civil War Buff - including replicas of soldier huts that were used as temporary housing during the winter months. Many Civil War soldiers died of wounds and disease. To give proper remembrance to these brave soldiers, White Oak Museum exhibits both military and personal items to honor the soliders, from private to general, who suffered both in battle and behind the front lines.

Our Guest this week is David Sears. We discuss his new book “Men Such as These”.

In 1951, James Michener went to Korea to report on a little known aspect of America’s stalemated war: navy aviators. His research inspired novel about these pilots became an overnight bestseller and, perhaps, the most widely read book ever written about aerial combat.

Using Michener’s notes, author David Sears tracked down the actual pilots to tell their riveting, true-life stories. From the icy, windswept decks of aircraft carriers, they penetrated treacherous mountain terrain to strike heavily defended dams, bridges, and tunnels, where well entrenched Communist anti-aircraft gunners waited to shoot them down. Many of these men became air combat legends, and one, Neil Armstrong, the first astronaut to walk on the moon.

We did get a response from the Texas Board of Education and at least one member has agreed to join us. The date of that is still to be determined but we will keep you up to date.

If you have not kept up with the news, Texas hit the National Press last month over its decisions to revamp the states curriculum and textbooks. I had read numerous articles and watch over 20 news shows and was surprised that almost none covered the story in full. It turned out to be all slants with no answers. OHP Radio presents John Ledyard - an Audio Book Presentation

He was 10 feet tall, could run faster, walk further, swim deeper, climb higher than any man alive now or has ever been. He sailed the seven seas, explored unknown regions, walked across most of the world and met the famous and native alike. A pre-curser and idol to Lewis and Clark, a native of Connecticut and probably the most fearless explorer of all time - John Ledyard.

In the next couple of weeks we will explore John Ledyard through an 1828 book by Jared Sparks. The book is biographical sketch on John Ledyard drawing from his journals and letters. This is a one and only production of its kind, brought to you by Our History Project Productions

SGT. Herculando Dias - "The U.S. Army’s First, Last and Only All-Black Rangers”

We are interviewing Herculano Dias of the 2nd Company Airborne Rangers (Korea). Former Sgt. Dias was a part of the elite and only all black Ranger Divisions in the History of the United States. This interview covers a book by Edward L. Posey entitled “The U.S. Army’s First, Last and Only All-Black Rangers”. This interview shows an in-depth look into not only the racial strife of the 1950’s but also explores the narrow mindset of racial equality of the time. Further, it explores the war from a firsthand account while bringing to light the accomplishments of our black forces and the everyday struggles and bravery they experienced.
