OHP Radio – The Worlds Bloodiest History and Joseph Cummins

What a great show. We have the honor of interviewing Author Joseph Cummins about his new book “The Worlds Bloodiest History” – Massacre, Genocide and the scares they left on Civilization. We focus on the story of “The Malmedy Massacre”. Not only that we touch on more: The Boston Massacre, Mountain Meadows Massacre, Sand Creek Massacre and the Colfax Massacre. We pile a lot of information in this fast paced, high impact and informative show. You will want to hear it several times, I promise.

This is the last Saturday show for 2009, but never fear we will return in January 2010 for more stories of our forgotten history. We want to wish you and your family from ours a merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and a record setting 2010.

We will Be Here on Monday Night so don’t miss the Relic Roundup with myself, Butch Holcombe with American Digger and Ian Conway of The Research and Recovery Show. Feel free to join in the topics and give us our input - 678-369-7943 or Skype wesley.c.canderson.

Until next year or Monday folks – have a good one.

OHP Radio - Finding Slavery

Today Butch and I take a look into Slavery, its trade, its past and some items that part of our dark history left behind. You may be thinking that the advent of slavery started when the white man first set foot on North American soil but we take a deeper look into the topic. In this country the focus will always be on the Enslaved Africans and rightly so and Our History Project is proud to engage in the topics of our history and our future. This may seem like a depressing topic but as always we make history fun. So, sit back, relax and join us as we introduce another “In the Dirt with American Digger” sement.

Have a great week,
Craig

OHP Radio - Fort Donelson

This week we explore a little Civil War History and we are pleased to have a guest host on this episode. John Walsh of Fort Donelson Relics joins us as we talk to Ranger and Historian Jim Jobe at the Fort Donelson National Battlefield Park. It was great because you have 2 people that field questions all the time about the area, movements, people like Jack Henson and the campaign.

The end of the year is approaching and tax time will soon be here. Don't forget us as you are picking your Charities this year. Every cent you give to Our History Project goes back into the shows and project we are involved in.

Speaking of which, we are pleased to announce that we will be starting the next phase in Our History Project in earnest. We have been meeting with teachers at Eastlake Elementary School in McDonough, GA to start a curriculum based program that will enhance the State and National Standards. This development when completed will be available to all the schools nationwide. We will be developing not only resources that will be availed in the classroom but hands on activities as well.

We will be sponsoring a story time once a week starting in January and as we move forward we will need volunteers nationwide as we expand this project. So if you are a part of an historic organization consider signing up your group to spread the word and the stories of our America.

In closing don't forget or Monday Night shows at 10 pm eastern. More updates on Or History Project will be revealed as they happen. That show will remain a weekly broadcast. The Saturday and Wednesday show will be alternating on a two week basis so there will be 1 show each week.

Our History Project Board Meeting and the Future

I have plenty of shows to put up, however I wanted this week’s focus to on our board meeting held on Monday, November 9th, 2009. I invite you to listen, give input and offer guidance as we go into this next year. We have accomplished so much in the short time we have been here and where we go from here either has a finite stopping point or will be an unbelievable adventure.

Cassie and I personally are going to step back this week to reflect on the past seven months and get a game plan together for the next physical year which is coming on fast. We have hit a home run on the entertainment side with our shows. That we can see from our numbers and even on 1000mikes.com in just being there 4 short weeks we now hold #3 in the top shows on that site. That says a lot. We have a lot of listeners, made some great friends and for that we are successful.

The other side is the financial part and the funds that will take us to that next level and further our vision and enhance our mission. On that we have had almost no support at all. A few great people have came forward and for that I am grateful, your funds, time resources and gifts have gone to a great cause and every penny was pinched to make it go that much further. Thank you.

Is this project going away? No. There will be some changes coming with a focus on what and how we can remain funded to further our mission and vision. For that I am excited because what it says is that we have put together a winning product and idea. It is like now is the time to get started.

Again, I invite you to listen, give feedback and support. Everyone has heard the JFK speech “Ask not what your country can do for you …”, but few remember the 6th paragraph in that same speech “..United there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided there is little we can do - for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds or split asunder.”

We are at a crossroads and we want to refocus and put forth our best. Anything less would be an insult to us and to you. It is our contention to focus our time, energy, talents and funds where we can do the most good as it relates to our non-profit venture.

We want your input, that’s why we did this as a non-profit in the first place. The history is ours - The memory is ours - and The future is ours.

OHP Radio - The Bell Witch with Pat Fitzhugh

Folks today we head to the Spooky Side of History. We go in search of the Southern myth and legend of the “Bell Witch” with Author and Historian Pat Fitzhugh. This is one of the most documented haunts in American History, and for good reason. It will not only send some chills down your spine but is also a fantastic story. We invite you to read more about Pat Fitzhugh on our Authors Corner or go over and explore his site and learn more about this haunting on his site www.bellwitch.org. Pat has written some great books on the story of The Bell Witch plus a brand new one “Ghostly Cries from Dixie”, which is sure to be a hit. He tells us one of the stories at the beginning of the show and I throw in a small teaser story at the end. What a way to spend the night!

After listening to our show head over to www.spookysouthcoast.com where my good friends will be telling ghost stories from 10PM-Midnight and you can listen live. So, listen to the Story of the Bell Witch, go grab the candy and sit back and listen to more stories Tim Weisberg, Matt Moniz and Matt Costa while getting ready for bed.

Happy Halloween!

OHP Radio - Finding the Cache

It was reported recently that a number of Canon Shells were found in the Southeaster U.S.. Some reports say that it was 40 while others say it was over 70. Either way it had to be a great historical find. While reports are still sketchy at this point is is believed that some if not all shells are to be donated to a museum, which is great because now everyone will have a chance to share in our history.

OK, now for the show. In light of this find, Butch and I put together a show which highlights more caches, meaning more than one item of the same type. Bullets, buttons, coin and maybe some gold. Come join us for the fun.

OHP Radio - Henry Kurtz - Great Locomotive Chase

Today on Our History Project our guest will be Henry Kurtz, who is the grandson of the late Historian Wilbur Kurtz. We discuss his book “The Runaway Train” which is about Andrews Raid or the commonly referred to name Great Locomotive Chase. However you say it, it is a great story in our history. What makes this book unique in its own rights is that Wilbur Kurtz married into the Fuller Family. Captain Fuller was a part of this chase and historic event. Being the Historian that Wilbur Kurtz was all the details and accounts was gotten first hand and these stories have been passed down through the family. Through Wilbur’s interviews, notes, manuscripts, writings and research this is a close to hearing the story firsthand.

OHP Radio - Eric Hammel - Where did it all come from?

The story starts: A German Officer get up from bed on the morning of June the 6th 1944 and looks out of his observation post. What he sees is an ocean filled with ships, men, aircraft and he has a feeling of dread.

The question we try and answer today is "Where did all this come from?" We explore what America did pre-war to bring about all that was seen that faithful morning. The planning, the companies, the material, the training and the foresight to bring it all together.

Bestselling Author Eric Hammel joins us again today to give insight on what this meant not only for our Troops but on the Home Front as well. To learn more about Eric Hammel and his books visit his Bio page here or visit his site Eric Hammel Books. Eric is a regular here so we have a lot of information on him, he has over 30 books to his credit with more on the way. We want to thank Mr. Eric for always being there.

OHP RADIO - Captain Dale Dye

We are joined by Captain Dale Dye (USMC Ret.). If you do not recognize the name I’m sure you will know the movies – Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Band of Brothers are just to name a few. Dale Dye is an actor, director, advisor and so much more. We credit him with bringing the real story to Hollywood and putting the realism into the movies we see. Capt. Dye is the real deal – 3 Purple Hearts, Bronze Star and several other medals of distinction. If anyone knows what it should be, he is one that can tell you from firsthand experience.

Also, starting this week you can purchase HQ copies of the show. The cost is $5 per CD. A $2 shipping charge will apply but only to one of them - so you can order 50 copies and still only be $2 shipping. AND, YES - IT'S TAX DEDUCTABLE!

All shows will still remain free online (no change there). All the shows we post are recorded at 48 bits and these CD's will be at 192 bit, Just a cleaner sound. The difference is also the size. We try and keep the downloads under 30MB in size while the CDs do not limit the size for audio.

We are just thinking of ways that we can provide a product at a low cost to you to help fund our Nonprofit Mission. We will be building our past shows so if you want a specific one let me know and I'l work on those first.

Archeologist and Metal Detectorist Working Together?

In the Dirt with American Digger Segment –

Wow, it’s great to be back….and rested.
This week Butch and I explore just a little bit of what could happen if professional and amateur archeologists and amateur metal detectorist were working together. How much we could accomplish together and what impact would it have on our history and research?

I do want to say now that this is happening more and more, especially in the southeast and both sides are seeing the benefits.

The Rest of the Story(s)

Hello everyone! I hope all is well with you. My family just got back from visiting that Mouse down in Florida and I am almost ready to get back at it. I think I'll need two weeks to catch up just on rest.

First I want to apologize to everyone for no show posting on Wednesday of this week. Due to Mother Nature and Mr. Newton I just could not make it happen. Everything was in place and tested before we left, however when "Showtime" came, thunderstorms and the theory that what can go wrong- did prevented it from happening as planned.

What I put together this week is the rest of the NGRHA Relic Show Audio. I have included the already released John Walsh, Pam Husky and Trish Ridgeway encase you missed any of those and I have added Debi Robinson from D & K Prints, Lawrence Christopher, Lenard Draper, Skip Mayorga, Mark Kirks and Breed Hickerson. They all tell us great stories and give us some information you don't want to miss. I listed each show here on the "Show Sponsor and Vender Spotlight Page". They will range from just a couple of minutes to about 20 minutes in length.

We'll be back Wednesday with our regular "In the Dirt" segment.

OHP Radio - Mark Pollard - Historian + Nash Farm Battlefield

Everyone, I would like to introduce one of my best friends Mark Pollard who is also the Henry County Civil War Historian. We have work together on so many projects over the years I could not begin to count the number. I actually took him to the Civil War Show at the Cobb Civic Center, and he being a captive guest agreed to be interviewed. It was either that or walk home, so…. he was glad to talk. In this episode we cover the Nash Farm Battlefield and the last battles of the Atlanta campaign of the War Between the States.

Please visit the Nash Farm in person or online. I am the Web Master for that site and also serve on the Board of the Friends of Nash Farm. We are very proud of what we have (a pristine Battlefield) and all that we have accomplished. For more information and tours visit http://henrycountybattlefield.com/ . We would love to have you. OHP Radio "In the Dirt with American Digger" - A New War Is Waging!

On today’s show we find out that Craig has been studying again, and that can only mean trouble, but we do learn some interesting fact about WW I and a story that is too good about WW II. Butch on the other hand brings us the tale of a whole new war that is being waged “in the trenches” you might say and it going on right now. Which side will you fall on? And, no its not political, we’re nonprofit and can’t go there.

Note: Butch and I had a great time in Ringgold, GA talking to the Dixie Relic and Recovery Club. Thank you all for the food, friendship and good time. We had a blast!

OHP Radio - Janet Pyatt - Historic Herbs

Yes, I said “Herbs.” Ever thought of that?

Well, I didn’t either until I met Janet. It soon hit me of course there where herbs. It was the medicine of the day. Very few got to go to the Doctor, there weren’t any around. Herbs played a huge role for our early settlers. They were not used only as medicine, they were used in everyday life as well such as around the house cleaning, cooking and in the field.

This was a fascinating interview that I hope you will enjoy too.

Visit Janet on her website http://pyattsherbsandmore.blogspot.com/ to learn more about her and her herbs.

One thing to add as you are listening to the interview. We recorded this one in July as well and that means that we had a great many thunder storms in the area and living life on the edge as we do we did it with charged air around us. We could not hear it at the time but it was picked up in the recording. We will have Mrs. Janet back on again later on for another segment but for this one lets throw in some nostalgia and remember those old 78’s and 45’s. Kids just ask your parents, they were the CD’s of yesteryear.

Have a great week,
Craig

OHP Radio - Digging at the Museum!

If you think what is in the yards and fields where you hunt are great finds, it doesn’t compare with what you can dig up at your local museum. No, we are not condoning taking a shovel or a detector and you do have to go during the day, but we are saying get off the couch and out the door. Go visit!

I bet there are a lot of folks who have not explored you local flavor of history. I’m no exception in this either. I went for years traveling the country and seeing all I could see and never looking around at what is here in front of me. Yes, I hit the biggies but not the smaller places. What I found is I missed a lot and you would be surprised at what can be found if you just take the time to look.

Folks, these are hard times and a lot of these local, county or regional historic places are closing- Maybe for a day, maybe two or maybe forever. Don’t let our history disappear lets go visit.

Have a great week,
Craig

We have had a lot of gracious things said about our show, by not only fans but our industry as well. Please continue to help us spread the word about Our History Project and our efforts as a nonprofit organization bent on persevering and educating America on our history. That sounds a little funny to me because we have a lot of overseas listeners as well that I am in contact with.

Do me a favor, over the next couple of weeks can you burn 10 disks (CDs) and hand them out to others who may not have not heard the show? Any one of the shows will do.

It would help us get the word out so to speak. Tell everyone about us and if you have suggestions, comments or criticisms please let me know. You are the rock on which this project is formed because you are some of the first here and if we screw up we need to know. If we can make it better then we need to know that to.

I personally have been waiting on this interview for a long time. I was great to sit down with Noonie and talk about Maggie (Martha Raye) and cover her life of service. She was a true inspiration to those who new her and we are glad to be able to highlight not only her career but her selfless service as well. Noonie has a wealth of information on her sites so please check them out www.nooniefortin.com

We did this interview while we had a lot of thunder storms going on from my end during our time together and you can hear it on the audio, we did not hear it at the time but it showed itself during the play back. I limited my side through editing as much as possible so I hope it is not too invasive.

Use our store to order Nonnie's Books or just click the books in the panel. There is no extra charges and OHP get a portion of the sale. Help support our project, vision and mission - Order everything through us, the entire database of Amazon is on our site.

In The Dirt Live!

This week was a great one, a tiring one. It was one where everything did not work out as planned on Saturday because for whatever reason the first part of the morning did not record. We missed a great in the dirt segment and some interviews with Mark Hudson, Arthur Cook and Bill Yarborough. The good part is that Butch and was joined by Cassie and we did another one on Sunday, which is what you will here today and I know all of the above mentioned to get their stories again.

It was a great show and I really had a blast. Thanks to all that came out especially Mark and his crew from Southeast Treasure Hunters that came from Alabama. It was a pleasure to meet everyone and we hope to do it again soon.

OHP Radio - Finding History Without A Detector

Some people just have all the luck, well some people and some animals. Have you ever found anything on the ground? I have had the honor of finding quite a bit of money over the years including $100 in rolled up bills (no, it was not yours). On "In the Dirt with American Digger" segment of Our History Project this week Butch and I talk today about these wonderful finds and how they just appear out of nowhere and seemingly only meant for you.

Oh, and have you ever wanted to breed a relic dog? Well, someone did.

Have a great week,

OHP - Peter Limburg - Deceived: The Story of the Donner Party

Author and friend Mr. Peter Limburg joins us this week to talk about the perils of the Donner Party. This is a tale you don’t want to miss. You may have heard the story before, and I believe it was in elementary school when I first heard this tale, but if you are like me I never have heard the whole story. The first epic that told of human consumption was and has always been a grizzly tale, at least in my mind.

However, hearing the story unfold you will discover new dimensions to this tale, one of deception, greed, hardships, trusts and mistrusts, courage, stupidity and fate. As I said, this is one you do not want to miss. Hear this story, learn what happened and also learn that a bad discussion can change your life forever. Deceived: The true story of the Donner Party can be found in hardcover and Kindle editions on Amazon.com.

In To The Wild

This week we talk about the dangers and the "Critters" of the great outdoors. You may be swinging a coil, hiking, camping, boating or what ever you do outdoors and rest assured if you do it often enough you will have a chance encounter with one of the rascals we mention here. But hey, running from bee's, dancing with ants and wrestling bears is considered exercise, so that is a plus. We'll let you know what to do, well maybe just a story, when these "surprises" happens to you. You may even live to tell the story....we did.

Once again, thank you for listening. We love the feedback we're getting so keep them coming. Don't miss this Saturdays show - we have Peter Limburg on and we will be discussing the fate of the Donner Party. Adventure in the High Serria's - from top of the world to the lowest parts of the underworld, decisions you only hope you'll never be faced with.

Please pass the show around, burn it to a CD, put it on a Thumb Drive, download it to an MP3 player, send a link...anyway you can share it, do. Remember it "Our History" and it is meant to be shared.

Have a great week and I'll see ya Saturday,

Craig

We are updating

In March of this year we have moved servers and are in the process of moving all of our audio over to our own. It was due to excessive rising cost and the lowering of service that prompted this move. Please bear with us as we make this transition. If there is a show you are looking for and do not see here as of yet, feel free to contact us and we can get you a direct download link.
