Eric Hammel makes his first appearance on Our History Project. Folks, Eric has over 30 titles to his credit and he writes about it all. A true student of history, Eric has written about World War 2, Korea and Vietnam. Eric is a wealth of knowledge as he has interview literally hundreds of people who were there to learn and write about those experiences.

Eric is also a fun loving guy and if you know us, that is what we enjoy the most History and Fun. This week among other things we will talk to Eric about his upcoming book “Road to Big Week” The Struggle for Daylight Air Supremacy over Western Europe.

Today we look at the document that started it all - “The Declaration of Independence”. This may not be an exciting show folks but it is one that will spell out the reasons why or founding fathers wrote it and what impact it made, not only for us a new independent country but for the rest of the world as well.

In today’s society where we have people who do not know their Vice President, Secretary of State, their representatives in Washington or even their own local officials, and really there are a lot of these folks out there. When if ever have you read, looked at or listened to this historical document? Listen today and you will. As I said this is not the most upbeat show we have had but I think it is important to hear. I left the show tunes background on for the entire show and do not know if it helps or is a distraction. Let me know and I can change it (Yes, I’m asking for an opinion, I can redo it.)

The show is only 18 minutes this week so give it a listen and think about those Founding Fathers who put their life on the line to sign it.

Next week Cassie talks to one of Georgia’s First Ladies Betty Vandiver who was the wife of Ernest Vandiver from 1959-1963 at a time when Civil Rights was an explosive issue for our Country and the South.

I had the honor of interviewing Mrs. Helen Denton this week. Folks, this is truly a remarkable woman and you will undoubtedly find her life as interesting as I did. Just some highlights: She typed the D-day Order’s for June 6th, 1944 - She cut a rug with Lawrence Welk - She stopped a moving train -She  meet the Queen and much, much more. In fact there is way too much to even to begin to list.

She is one of Georgia’s most interviewed people, but I think we got a story that was different and inspiring. I have included the excellent “GA PBS TV” interview that you can watch as well. I suggest that you take our interview with you on the road and watch the video at home. Both interviews will give you the complete picture of this legend of service. This is great story of service, community, sadness, hope and sharing.

And, we will also talk about the people who built the ship, the cover-ups and the conspiracy theories about this ship and it’s sinking. We will also answer the age old question of - “Why does the world romanticize this tragedy?”

D-Day Invasion with Spencer Wurst

This week we celibrate the 65th Anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy (D-Day) and remember those who were there and those who have fallen there.

Our guest this week is Colonel Spencer Wurst, who made the jump that faithful day with the 82nd Airborne. He was part of Company F of the 505 Parachute Infantry Regiment. He made three of the four combat jumps, dropping into Italy, Normandy and Holland.

Air Force Museum @ Warner Robins, GA with Mike Rowland

This week we traveled to Warner Robins , GA and had a visit with Mike Rowland who gave us not only a great tour of the Aviation Museum but gave us a lot of stories behind the planes and the people who flew them. Join us as we learn about our Air Corps from Mike and the Air Force Museum. More information can be found at their website:  http://www.museumofaviation.org/ .

If you plan on visiting I would recommend at least an hour and a half just to take the whirlwind tour. Plan on staying the day to get the full effect and story. This is a huge facility folks with several building and a garden of planes outside.

Early Baseball with Tim Darnell

What better way to start the season than remembering a little of the past. Our guest this week is Tim Darnell. Tim is the author of “The Crackers, Early Days of Atlanta Baseball.” Tim not only tells us stories of the second most winning-est team in all of professional sports, but gives us an insight to the early days of the game including Professional, Minor League and Negro League Ball.

Washington - Wilkes County Museum

Each year all over the country vacationer’s and history buffs travel the United States. In many of these towns, cities and parishes lies a historical home that prompts visitors to come in, look around and see what life was like in the olden days. Behind the doors of these places we are allowed to go back in time and take a glimpse of who the people were, learn about the families and see what is was like not to have a TV or a computer.

This week we focus on the historical part of travel and invite you to come along with us. We traveled to Historic Washington, Georgia in Wilkes County to tour a very grand old home/museum  and see a great collection of artifacts from a day gone by, among them there are 21 hand painted movie posters that were on display at the famous Lowes Grand Theater.

We had a great tour and learned a lot from the first county in Georgia, but we invite you to explore all of our small communities though out the U.S., the stories there are real and the artifacts are real. What better way to learn our heritage than to hold a little of the past in your hands?

As we have said over the past couple of months on the Monday night show, we have severed our account with Podbean. The price point for hosting compared with the down time experienced just did not seem to fit, the shows were down as much as up. They did preform great on getting the links out and having them picked up by other crawlers, but the negatives weighed more than the positives.

It did take an extra month; I guess them hoping that we would re-consider (We didn't); for them to take down all of the feeds and shows. My friend, historian and award winning author Bruce Gamble joins us to talk about the Top Marine Ace "Gregory "Pappy" Boyington" and the famous Black Sheep Squadron. Pappy Boyington is a legend, his antics and persona was heightened in the TV Series Ba Ba Black Sheep and made him an American Icon.
Bruce Gamble has written two (2) books on Boyington and the Black Sheep. He is quote in historical circles to be the de facto historian on the legendary figure.
